People Who Had A Surprising Fall From Grace
Vote up the most surprising public downfalls.
When it comes to celebrities and public figures, we usually see the best in them. Their humor radiates through our TV screens; their talent brings joy to our ears; and their inspirational speeches and practices motivate us to believe in positive change. As a result, we desperately want to believe they are genuinely good people - in and away from the public eye.
Unfortunately, anyone following the news recognizes this isn't always the case. Some celebrities' and public leaders' damaged reputations eventually reconcile themselves as evidence reveals they were right about the events that condemned them. Other times, the truth paints a harsher, more accurate picture of the person's character.Â
This list features people who had surprising falls from grace.
In the early 2000s, Jared Fogle became famous for losing more than 200 pounds by eating just two Subway sandwiches per day, plus exercising. He was the chain's ambassador for years, even starting the Jared Foundation in 2004, a non-profit organization meant to help fight childhood obesity.
In July 2015, police learned he was connected to a child pornography case through his organization's former executive director, Russell C. Taylor. Upon investigation, authorities discovered Fogle was aware that more than 400 of the pornographic materials in Taylor's home included underage children.
Additionally, Fogle was caught paying for sex with a 17-year-old in New York City before requesting through text that she connect him with other girls in the area. He subsequently knowingly had intercourse with two other underage girls before his arrest.
Ultimately, Fogle was convicted for inappropriate behavior with 14 of his victims and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.

Shocking fall? For decades, comedian Bill Cosby provided funny, family-centered entertainment enjoyed by children and adults alike. His top-ranked sitcom, The Cosby Show, graced TV airwaves for eight years as he portrayed an ideal family image as a doctor raising five children with his on-screen wife.
Cosby continued to tour and participate in events into his 70s, selling out crowds as fans traveled in droves for the chance to see him in person. In 2013, however, comedian Hannibal Buress's skit, which alluded to Cosby's sexual indecency, eventually exposed him as a sexual predator.
As the piece grew in popularity, multiple women found the courage to speak up about the sexual abuse they endured while working with Cosby over the years. From the 1960s up until 2018, Cosby allegedly used his popularity to sexually coerce and assault women. During his trial, the comedian was accused of multiple cases of rape, drugging women before sexually assaulting them, child sexual abuse, and sexual misconduct.
He was sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison for his crimes.

Shocking fall?By the time Oscar Pistorius hit the track at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he had already won over the hearts and minds of the entire world. He was born without fibulas, so surgeons amputated his lower legs when he was 11 months old. The bullying he experienced, and his unstable family life pushed him to find a healthy physical outlet at the gym, and that's when he realized he could run.
Pistorius quickly rose to stardom as one of the fastest men in the world - who happened to be running on prosthetics. Handsome, inspiring, and well-liked, the track star became a natural global hero as he acquired sponsors and endorsements that praised his character and ability to triumph against all odds.
His popularity and success hit a striking halt on February 14, 2013, when Pistorius fired four bullets through a bathroom door and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, whom he said he mistook for a burglar. The track phenomenon lost all of his endorsement deals, including contracts with Nike and Oakley, was arrested, and publicly tried in court.
The world again tuned in to watch Pistorius seal his fate - this time under scrutiny, disgust, and sadness. Instead of admitting his fault, Pistorius sobbed in court proceedings and claimed that he was unable to think clearly in the moments leading up to his ending Steenkamp's life.

Shocking fall?In 2000, Ian Watkins drew worldwide attention as lead singer of the nu-metal band Lostprophets. As the band's popularity spread, it was picked up by Q Prime, the management company also responsible for bands like Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
As lead singer, Watkins maintained a stellar reputation, regularly boasting about his abstinence from alcohol and drugs as he carried his clean-cut image into the group's continually growing success.
However, the musician's curated image began showing signs of deterioration when rumors surfaced that he was, in fact, a sex-crazed drug addict with a habit of conducting inappropriate sexual activities over the internet with younger fans. As pictures and videos of Watkins surfaced, proving his guilt, he continued to deny his activity by claiming the images were digitally manipulated. Holding a degree in graphic design, Watkins even claimed he had created and leaked the photos at one point.
When investigators discovered a video of him allegedly aroused by a naked baby, the Lostprophets front man couldn't uphold his denial any longer. In 2013, he was charged with 24 sex-related crimes, including two counts of attempted baby rape, sexually touching a 1-year-old, and forcing a crazed groupie to physically abuse her child during a video chat. In addition, he admitted to using and creating child pornography.

Shocking fall? For more than a decade, Armie Hammer took Hollywood roles that echoed his real-life persona by playing wealthy, good-looking, clean-cut characters. After starring in films like The Social Network, Call Me By Your Name, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., he was well on his way to creating an extensive career in the entertainment industry.
However, any dreams of long-term, flattering stardom came to a halt in 2021, when multiple women accused Hammer of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Although the actor had previously admitted in a 2013 Playboy interview that he enjoyed having rough sex, he also expressed at the time that he had toned his preferences down once he married Elizabeth Chambers in 2010.
His accusers, including Courtney Vucekovich, Paige Lorenze, and a woman named Effie, claim that over the course of their relationships, Hammer moved beyond the typical boundaries of a BDSM relationship by ignoring the typical pre-intercourse consent conversations, often bit and bruised them, and admitted to wanting to break one of the women's ribs to barbecue and eat it. Shared text messages supposedly sent from Hammer during his relationships with these women also describe cannibalistic desires.
Hammer and his wife publicly shared that they were filing for divorce in 2020, shortly before the news made worldwide headlines. Although he was slotted to star in a film with Jennifer Lopez, along with a Paramount+ miniseries and a thriller film, he was dropped from all future projects.

Shocking fall?As the daughter of Burma (now Myanmar) liberation movement leader Aung San, Aung San Suu Kyi rose to fame for her Gandhi-inspired stance against the military junta, an organization that had held the nation under militant control since 1962. Campaigning for democracy and peace as the founder of the National League of Democracy, she was under house arrest for 15 years as she promoted an inclusive society. The politician gained numerous awards for her efforts, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
Once released from house arrest and able to serve, Aung San Suu Kyi served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar. However, instead of promoting peaceful, democratic cooperation among all cultural societies within the nation, she formed an almost authoritarian state that turned a blind eye to the genocide of the country's Rohingya Muslim citizens. As she refused to allow anyone to aid her in her leadership decisions and continued to curate her position as an isolated leader, she made excuses for the military's brutality against minorities.
Aung San Suu Kyi was stripped of peace-driven awards for her inaction and betrayal of her word, including the Amnesty International Human Rights Award, the US Holocaust Museum’s Elie Wiesel Award, and the Freedom of the City award.
