He Has A Top-Notch Dramatic Education
For a short time, Hardy considered modeling (he even won a competition at 21). But once he committed to acting, he got the very best education he could, attending both the Richmond Drama School and the prestigious Drama Centre London.
He said of the Drama Centre's work ethic:
When other schools would be doing… 30 hours, we were doing 60. And we'd be doing stuff that would prepare you in a very different way. It was a school that catered very differently to each independent, individual need.

2He Doesn't Consider Himself A Tough Guy
Don't let his hard characters fool you: the real Tom Hardy isn't really a tough guy, at least according to him. He told Esquire:
I'm not a fighter. I'm a petit little bourgeois boy from London. I don't fight, I mimic. I don’t feel very manly. I don’t feel rugged and strong and capable in real life, not how I imagine a man ought to be. So I seek it, to mimic it and maybe understand it, or maybe to draw it into my own reality.

He Rehearses In Front Of His Dogs
Everyone has a rehearsal process. Hardy's involves canines. He said in a Vanity Fair interview:
I do think there's a lot about a dog that we can learn from, and I do put the dog into a lot of my characters because a dog, if you watch them, they're so funny to watch. They speak with their eyes and their body, and I find that fascinating to observe. And another thing about the dog is you can never fool the dog into thinking that you're somebody else, so they're great bullsh*t monitors - especially for actors… I rehearse in front of them, yeah. But it's very soul-destroying. They're very harsh critics, dogs. And they're very rarely impressed.
