    Why Did Hange Succeed Erwin?

    Why Did Hange Succeed Erwin?

After Erwin's passing, Hange took over his role as the commander of the Survey Corps. Some fans might have wondered why the role didn't go to Levi instead.

While there are plenty of fan theories about why Hange is best-suited for the rule, there's also some concrete information from Isayama himself. In the Attack on Titan Character Encyclopedia, Isayama explained that he needed the commander to be a person who could take responsibility for the members' actions while also allowing them to do their own thing. Levi might have been a little too controlling for Isayama's narrative purposes.

    Isayama Had Trouble Writing Erwin

    Isayama Had Trouble Writing Erwin

Erwin is a complex and fascinating character, but he wasn't always that way in Isayama's mind.

In the Attack on Titan Character Encyclopedia, Isayama explained that Erwin's character wasn't really clear to him until he wrote Erwin's reaction to learning that Titans had once been human. After that, he had a much better sense of his character.

    They Use Specially Bred Horses

    They Use Specially Bred Horses

You probably know that the Survey Corps get around on horses. What you might not know is that those horses are specially bred by hunting villages that were commissioned by the government. These horses can run up to 75-80 km/h at top speed, and are able to run for up to 12 hours straight at 35 km/h, or 20 km/h when pulling a cart. They also have docile temperaments and don't fear Titans.

Because of these special features, these horses cost more money than an average citizen can make in a year, which means few people outside of the Survey Corps own them. The Survey Corps value their horses so much that they consider them members of the team. If a horse passes away, Corps members make an effort to preserve as much of their mane as possible.

Sasha's Name Has A Surprising Origin

The Attack on Titan Character Encyclopedia revealed that Sasha was named after Sacha Baron Cohen, a comedy actor who is best known for his starring role in the Borat films.

Isayama chose this because he wanted to emphasize her role as a comic relief character.

    Moblit Had A Drinking Problem

    Moblit Had A Drinking Problem

Being Hange's assistant is no easy task. That might be why Moblit drinks the most out of any of the adult members of the Survey Corps.

The Survey Corps are so poor that they can't even afford things like milk and sugar for their tea, so we have to imagine that whatever he's drinking isn't that great.

Mikasa's Appearance Is Inspired By A Woman Isayama Met

Mikasa's Appearance Is Inspired By A Woman Isayama Met

Mikasa's character design has received a lot of praise from the anime community - but where did Isayama come up with it? In the Attack on Titan Character Encyclopedia, he revealed that he was inspired by a woman he met while working at a part-time job before he became a manga artist. He modeled Mikasa's scarf, hairstyle, eyes, and eyebrows on her.

Also, this woman is the reason Mikasa is partially Asian, unlike the rest of the cast.
